there's a fisheye lens effect in the new camera, and naturally my first instinct was to aim it at my furry little mate, basu baageli. i was going for the cute, big-nosed appearance but this groovy bliss face picture is probably an actual representation of how he feels about yoghurt.

my year is still sputtering to a start. during the past three weeks, i had a painful flare-up of joint inflammation, neuralgic pain and all the works, mostly in my hips and legs, that seem to be getting better now, but there were days i could barely walk and the lack of restorative sleep has left me somewhat woozy. i'm of two minds when it comes to writing about things like this. on one hand i hate to be always complaining, on the other i don't want to keep a glossed-over blog where life is always impossibly smooth and perfectly staged. if anything, i feel like i should write more about the not-so-nice things, like i always swear i will. it just isn't always possible to be very analytical about wanting to gnaw your own leg off, for example.

i got back on my feet in time to shovel some meringue-like snow that appeared overnight, more of it than i expected. it'll probably all melt away anyway, so i just cleared some narrow paths and the gate. i took it slow and easy, careful not to aggravate any more pains. i also tried to saw down a birch that fell during the storms, but it's really a job for the chainsaw i still don't have. it's just really bugging me that the top lies across a path... even though it's not really in the way in everyday life.

today is nuutti's day, the very last day of yuletide in finland. it's also kind of like halloween in that in some parts of the country children dress up in costumes and go from house to house, singing for treats. it's been years since any kids have wandered to my door, but if any are hoping to score this year, they'd better not wait for long, because i'm destroying the chocolate candy fast.
