the cranes moved today. their cries woke me up early in the morning, or one of these mornings, i'm not sure... but today, after noon, they left. in all sorts of figurative ways. trumpeting triumphantly, ploughing through the sky. they flew right above me, forty or so of them, as i stumbled into a clearing in the woods to see better. i don't envy them, really. but i wonder how they feel about going. especially the seasoned birds who know what an ordeal it is. i know i'd be terrified.

i went mushrooming before i had to come back to the city again. it's not really that i care so much about mushrooms, but i could do that all day every day. it's a good way to spend days, lose track of time. it's the only thing that makes sense anymore. it's the same function as shopping, only better because there are no people, no muzak and everything is free. there is an idea of what is desired and it's just a matter of finding the right thing. the thrill is in the luck. the satisfaction in the simplicity of the most basic task there can be. finding food.

and the ones that can't be eaten for some reason or other, are often the most interesting to look at. you'll see.
