so maybe i didn't walk five kilometers to the recycling center at my old school like i had planned to, but i am so proud of myself for cooking this meal. i sent out a little prayer as i was preparing it: please let someone drop in on a surprise visit. i knew it would be too good to eat all alone. but of course no one came. and it was that good.

clockwise from top, i had a red cabbage, red onion, green pepper and roasted pumpkin seed salad with a lemon-mustard dressing; sauerkraut (cheap supermarket brand) and fermented mustard sprouts (homemade), and root vegetable fries. i tested whether is it worth my while soaking the cut up veggies in cold salt water and tossing them in cornflour before the usual spicing and dousing with oil. i dare say it is well worth it, especially with the sweet potato ones. mmm, crunchy... i also had turkish yoghurt with chili and thyme for dipping.

i have a lot of the salad left over, i think tomorrow i will add some medium-boiled eggs to it for lunch. and kidney beans, yes. i need to boil a whole pot of them anyway. i'm making spicy bean and grated sweet potato patties to put into the freezer. i really need to start a habit of pre-made meals for days when i'm not so energetic.

today i felt really tired all day, yet somehow managed to do a lot. i finally dug my own vacuum cleaner out of storage. the vole droppings keep on appearing even though i haven't seen any indoors for a long time. my dad's vacuum broke a while ago and there's only so much a sweeping can do to a wool rug. they say owls are growing hungry because they have no voles to eat. i would gladly have some famished birds as house guests, because all of their prey must be in here.

i also replaced the lilac branches in a vase with maple shoots from the back yard, trees with no future. then i couldn't resist cutting a bough and some twigs off a cherry tree even though you're not supposed to cut them in the spring. call it sakura envy.

now i'm going to watch some early hitchcock films on TV and do nothing for the rest of the day, except maybe cook up some caramel to devour with lingonberries later. perhaps my last video of the month will be a thriller.
