well here's a day that has been longed for. i have my very first snowdrop! when was it that i first planted these? long enough ago, i'd say. but here it is now. last fall, i salvaged the last two bulbs remaining from under the apple tree behind the sauna, and moved them into the lily bed in front of the house. i'm so glad i did. clearly a better position for them, hopefully they'll now spread out and live for very long...
another first, this year's pioneering blue anemones. i looked out the kitchen window this morning, kind of saddened that i'd be missing them this year. little did i know that they were already opening up their buds right under my nose! this full-on spring today, it came so suddenly. i really wasn't expecting all this, when i stepped out. most of the snow is gone and it's so very warm even though the wind is quite strong. birds seem to be all returning at once. yesterday, the first cranes were calling from a distance. i saw one in town, clearly a bit lost since it was desperately trying to catch up with a 'V' formation of some smaller birds that were headed north, crying after them.
it's no big surprise that i spotted these tinuscule mushrooms, i guess. there is something about the surface of the caps that my eye is really attuned to.

indoors, my cherry branches have finally decided to blossom as well. i didn't expect them to, anymore, since they're in full leaf already. i suppose i cut them too early, and the flower buds took their time developing while the leaves were ready to go. this year we have a new cherry tree, a small bushy variety. i don't think it will produce anything yet, but it will be interesting to see if it will pollinate more fruit for the old trees in the coming years. i was happy to see the trunk emerge unharmed, all of my stomping around, to pack the snow too dense for voles to tunnel to it paid off. i'm still not taking the rabbit fencing down just yet, though, like i did with the bigger trees...
it's starting to rain now, and everything's gone grey and cloudy. that is good news for my cardigan, i've been a little neglectful. however, it is also tempting to put on rubber boots and head out to the woods...
