i set out the blue oats again today. i kept hearing little footsteps all through the night and found vole droppings in my slippers in the morning. and all over the house, too. in the kitchen i discovered a gnawed banana in the fruit bowl. i cut out the end and put it back. my life-changing loaf of bread was untouched under its towel on the counter, thank goodness.

the first leg of my walk was kind of hazy, though the sun was high up and the brightness of it hurt my eyes when i first stepped outside. even the air sat perfectly still, which is rare on the coast. i found a random burr in the middle of the road. must have fallen off the coat of some animal. i wondered if the ravens are moulting because i haven't seen any in a while. all in all, it was very quiet until the sun began to shine full on. suddenly the crusty frost on the trees started to come down in tiny bits, and the sound it made hitting the snow was a lot like raindrops on still water. it was eerie and wonderful, all around me.

by the time i got to the beach the temperature must have risen several degrees, it was almost hot in there. someone had driven in circles on the ice, but i was too timid to go out that far, despite knowing the water is knee-deep, and that it's still frozen solid throughout. i could hear the chiming of the falling frost even from afar. the trees were pastel-coloured and shimmering in the bright sunshine.

(when i got back home there were fresh teeth marks on the cut end of my banana. cursed beasts.)

it's impossible to capture and share what it was really like in the woods but i tried anyway:
