today i woke up so very early, had smoked cheese on sour rye crackers for breakfast and rode that dreaded bus back home. it rained a lot on the way, but the evening turned out clear and beautiful (before the monsoon continued into the night). it's been pouring with rain all week long, and it shows. i took about 300 fungus photos in a few hours. and picked three basketfuls of mushrooms. it's a tiny little basket, though... i need a bigger one.
these (suillus luteus) had just exploded out on the yard. i don't know whether to call them slippery jacks or sticky buns... we call them voitatti (=butter bolete, but in english that is a whole different boletus). they were all slimy and wet, so cleaning them up was a tough job. not for the squeamish. nor vegans. there were maggots... and i'm sure i cooked many. sorry.
edit: i forgot to use the perfectly fitting dictionary.com word of the day... um, my gore-tex sneakers stood the test of today's quaggy conditions and kept my toes dry and warm!
