some colours and textures from the shore. the seawater is a much brighter jewel tone to the naked eye, a tealy turquoise (tearquoise?), and that orange seaweed in the tide pool had a neon glow, i'm not even kidding. gorse (or furze) is in bloom everywhere. this island has a palette far beyond the greens, whenever it's not all grey and dull...
the photos are from middle cove, near charles fort, taken on my long walk on saturday. my feet are achy but i kind of want to go again. on the other hand it's so nice and comfy and warm here, cocooned in a sleeping bag with my trusty hot water bottle... in between those two options, there's SuperValu and chocolate. can you believe i went in yesterday to buy some and forgot? i got a smoothie and scottish butter biscuits instead.
yesterday was nothing short of magical. after a gloomy sunday, i woke up happy, washed my hair and went for a walk in the misty, warm rain. finally popped in to the little cemetery in the centre of town. it was as lovely and odd as the rest of them. lichen grew like roses on the headstones, some of them a bit uncertain...
in the harbour i saw a rainbow, first reflected on the still water, then up across the sky. i tried to photograph that, but the shots don't do the sight justice. i alwaus fail to capture the amazing turquoise hue of the water, too, but while doing so, a lone swan swam right below me and posed for a fine portrait.
on my way home i picked up from the ground a huge pin with a pearly head, perfect for some voodoo hoodoo... sighed with relief when there was no motorcycle in front of the house, but the biker i was hoping to avoid was visiting anyway. i hid behind my laptop in the sitting room, but he somehow managed to hug me coming and going, even though he left early to hitch-hike home. i feel a mixture of loss and relief, an oddly light sadness best conveyed by the animals. i guess when something gets taken away, you always want it that much more.
luckily there is a delightfully mad and flirtatious lad staying over in our house to keep me amused and entertained. he is so lovely i could bite a piece off his surfer cheek and then some. but alas, he is spoken for and thus forbidden also. ah, a few more weeks of this, then i'm off to cool down in frosty ol' finland...
only, if i had enough money, i'd send my heavy luggage ahead and hop on homewards via dublin, belfast, london, edinburgh, gothenburg, stockholm...
