today was the day. woke up early-ish, headed out to the cranberry bogs. not as many berries to pick as i had expected, birds and bugs had beat me to it apparently, but i got my share.
cranberry-picking is not for the easily discouraged. at first sight, there is nothing there. they have to be sought, gently prying into the moss and grass. it is helpful when the bogs are so dry one can crawl and lay low without getting soaked. easier on the back, too.
a proper path leads into these newfound bogs, i discovered, as does another that took me easily back. too easily, i thought. but little by little the map of my territory is being pieced together, areas joined in surprising twists and turns.
i had lunch on top of a small boulder overlooking my favourite little bog, the one with all the marsh labrador tea. a boiled egg, nuts and berries, and tea from my flask. then on to other bogs, more cranberries. it was a much warmer day than it seemed in the morning, i was all wrapped up in woolly longjohns and whatnot. the furry vest i had to lose at some point.
on my way home, i couldn't resist rearranging some cones...
